Overview
"Our' earth shows its bowels at an open-pit mine. In this quarry near Maastricht the First Dutch Cement Industry -ENCI - exploited marl out of St. Pietersberg since 1924. Because of the negative environmental impact they had to stop mining in 2020. It has become a unique natural reserve these past years. Gazing down the huge hole in the earth we’re also looking back in deep geological times. Layer upon layer of stone, until a period 66 million years ago, the age of mosasaurs (giant sea lizards). In those days this part of the globe was a tropical sea. Fossil remains of this large marine reptile were found for the first time in the limestone at Maastricht in 1766, and helped shape thoughts on evolution and extinction."
